My sister Emily Demuth Ishida and I co-wrote three historical novels for middle-grade readers. Plank Road Summer, set in 1852, and Plank Road Winter, set in 1871, take place in rural Racine County, Wisconsin, where Emily and I grew up. Hattie’s War is set in Milwaukee during the Civil War. My solo effort, Kingdom of the Birds, is set in sixteenth-century Germany during Martin Luther’s time.
